Guillem Balague has claimed it would be a good time for Mauricio Pochettino to leave Tottenham this summer but he will only quit for a club with bigger ambitions.

The Spanish football expert, who ghosted Pochettino’s autobiography, has suggested the Argentine manager’s time in north London could be coming to an end.

Speaking on the Ask Guillem section of Football Index’s YouTube account (08:00), Balague said: “I know what Mauricio Pochettino would bring to any side. I do have the impression as well that he has given everything to Spurs and he owes them nothing.“So in a way would be a good summer to find a solution or find another challenge. But he has to be somewhere that absolutely fully believes in him because if you’re going to a club that is doubting between Solskjaer and Pochettino then it’s best to stay where you are.

“Real Madrid knew they could not get Pochettino out of Spurs that easily. If I’m Pochettino I’m thinking it seems like Man United are sorted. It seems like they’ve found with Solskjaer the right mood and the right link to the past and a lot of things that are in his favour.

“If that’s the case why even think that leaving is a possibility? Why not focus on the job in hand?

“My thoughts are that Pochettino has done everything and more for Spurs, but if there is not a club with bigger ambitions and more money then why not stay at Spurs, which is the most likely situation right now.”

OPINION

Is this good news for the Tottenham fans desperate for Pochettino to stay for another half-decade? Not really. Balague has the ear of Pochettino and the two worked closely on the manager’s well-received autobiography, which was published at the end of 2017 and then updated last year. You can be sure that Balague wouldn’t be mooting the possibility of a swift end to the Argentine’s time in north London unless that is a fair approximation of how he the manager himself is feeling. Yet, the door has closed on Real Madrid, and it is almost shut on Manchester United, although the club’s failure to appoint Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer suggests things are not totally nailed down as far as the permanent manager’s post is concerned. Where else could Pochettino go? Chelsea, perhaps. His former club Paris Saint-Germain? Maybe. AC Milan? Of Europe’s other elite clubs, there don’t seem to be too many obvious openings.
