OPINION
There are some players who seem to act as constant scapegoats for their sides, the kind of player who supporters turn on regardless of how the rest of the side are getting on. Grant Xhaka is often that man for Arsenal. The Swiss international might be one of Unai Emery’s rotating cast of captains, but that doesn’t stop the Gunners from getting on his back. Against Manchester United on Sunday, however, he was magnificent. After bagging Arsenal’s opener against the Reds with a serving long range effort that left David De Gea stranded, he then stepped up to the plate and put in a comprehensive midfield masterclass. If there was a ball to be won, Xhaka was first on it. If there was a 50/50 to be contested, it was the enforcer who was there to put his foot in. Xhaka gets a lot of stick, and there are times when you can see why. He can be rash and wasteful and ineffective, but against Manchester United he was none of those things, and he looked every inch the battling leader. If he plays like this more often, Arsenal could have a real player on their hands, and a vital weapon in their fight for European football.
