Even when Arsenal win comfortably and keep a clean sheet, Shkodran Mustafi gets it in the neck. The defender, 26, is a 20-times Germany international and a World Cup winner, but a significant section of Gooners don’t rate him at all. Mustafi played the full 90 minutes of Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Rennes at Emirates Stadium on Thursday night as they secured a 4-3 aggregate victory to reach the quarter-finals of the Europa League. It was the mainstay’s 31st appearance of what has been a testing season for him in a defence that is forever changing in terms of personnel. Much of the criticism came late in the game, when the home side came under the cosh as they held on for victory. Mustafi was sloppy when he gave away possession on the right, which led to M’Baye Niang’s strike hitting the outside of the post. Arsenal fans let rip on social media, with many claiming they don’t want him to play for the club again.
