Adrian Durham claimed that Newcastle United attacker Salomon Rondon needed to increase his goal ratio dramatically in order to be worth £50million.

The broadcaster made the remarks when responding to Tony Cascarino’s bold claim in his column for The Times that the forward on loan from West Bromwich Albion could soon be worth £50million and that he was capable of featuring in the Champions League.

Durham made clear that he thought Rondon had done well at St James Park this season but in order to fulfil Cascarnio’s claim he needed to score more goals.

“Tony Cascarino of talkSPORT fame reckons Salomon Rondon should be consider the signing of the season and should now cost £50million, do we all agree?” said Durham on talkSPORT (Tuesday March 19th, 18:36).

“Don’t know about £50million he also said he was a Champions League player, I think he has done well, done okay, I think his goal ratio needs to increase dramatically if you’re talking about £50million.”

OPINION

Durham is normally the one making outlandish comments but even Cascarino’s Rondon praise is too much for him. The broadcaster commented on his fellow pundit’s suggestion during the ‘Heads Gone’ portion of his radio show and that says a lot. While Durham doesn’t exactly laugh at the idea of Rondon being worth £50million, he certainly isn’t in total agreement. It’s easy to see why as Rondon would need to score more than he has for a club to invest that much when you consider his age. The forward is set to turn 30 in September and you feel that his days of being a potential £50million player are way behind him. While Rondon has done well to score 10 goals for the Magpies this season, a club who has that sort of money to spend would expect a much higher return. However while that part of Cascarino’s claim is bold, he does have a point when he says the forward should be a contender for signing of the season as he has proven to be a key part of Rafa Benitez’s side this season.
