Matt Polster has admitted that he is frustrated to have not made his debut for Rangers yet, despite being told by Steven Gerrard at one point that he was due to play a game.

The 25-year-old, who signed for the Gers for free in January, was set to play against Dundee in the Scottish Premiership, but had to be left out of the squad due to a groin injury and has not been in a matchday squad since.

The one-time USA international is disappointed to have not played for Rangers yet, and hopes that he can return to full fitness soon to help out in the final fixtures of the season.

“It was quite frustrating missing out against Dundee,” Polster said, as quoted by BT Sport. “The manager told me before going out to training that I was going to make my debut – but things didn’t happen as I would have liked.

“I didn’t feel comfortable and I didn’t want to put the team or him in a difficult position where I would start the match but then after 20 or 30 minutes and have to be pulled out.

“I was pretty frustrated by the whole thing.

“From both sides we were a little bit disappointed. He wanted me to be out there and to enjoy that first match. I wanted the same.

“Now it’s just about getting back into it and getting my fitness.”

OPINION

Polster will surely play for Rangers soon, but he has had a lot of injury issues in the last year or so, and his latest setback could be a worry in the long-term. Gerrard played against Polster when the US international played for Chicago Fire, but in 2018, the right-back made just three appearances and was eventually released by the Illinois outfit. It is not ideal for him to go into Rangers half way through a season and try to fight his way into the senior squad, and perhaps he was rushed to fitness which is why he has a groin injury. Either way, it may be best for Polster to wait for next season before he can start to have a proper impact at Ibrox. The 25-year-old will surely come good eventually and his ability to play in multiple positions could be a real help in 2019/20. Polster needs to get fit first though and if that means him going on a special training programme and not playing for the first team then so be it.
