Newcastle United’s much-maligned forward Ayoze Perez has been named among the top creator of chances among forwards in the Premier League this season, according to the Times.

The newspaper’s in-depth report and study into the Magpies’ Spanish star puts the 25-year-old sixth for the amount of goal scoring opportunities fashioned with 38, putting him one behind Crystal Palace’s Zaha and among huge names like Eden Hazard (74), Mohamed Salah (56) and Raheem Sterling (55).

Perez has come under much fire from the Newcastle faithful this season, seemingly inspiring his fingers-in-the-ears celebration, but was a two goal star on Saturday in his side’s 3-2 comeback over Everton.

Opinion

There have been times this season where fans at St James’ Park have wondered what exactly Perez brings to the team but while he might have been creating opportunities that were being missed by himself or his teammates, he finally has something to show for it in the form of goals and assists. Even on a good day there are times the Spanish star looks a little lost or off the pace and if he could sort out his consistency then he would pose a much, much bigger threat to the opposition. Even so, he is obviously a trusted member of the squad under Rafael Benitez and these stats show why. The likes of Salomon Rondon must love playing alongside him with the amount of chances he create and perhaps the Toon Army will stay off his back for a while after he dazzled on the way to a surprise victory against Everton.
