Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Nuno Espirito Santo has been identified as a potential replacement for Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri by the board at Stamford Bridge, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim on their website that the Blues’ top brass have been growing into big fans of the Portuguese boss after his work at Molineux, guiding his side to sit seventh in the Premier League in their first season after promotion.

It is stated that while Sarri is not set to be sacked before the end of the season there is a feeling he is not the right fit for the club and as such there is likely to be a shake up in the dugout, with Chelsea legend Frank Lampard also named as a potential candidate.

Opinion

There can be no getting away from the fact that Nuno has done a quite remarkable job at Wolves this season – albeit helped by wealthy owners and strong connections to secure some top quality signings – but managing Chelsea is a whole different kettle of fish. There is little pressure on the Portuguese manager’s head at Molineux – everyone just wants him to do his best and whatever happens, happens, but at Stamford Bridge there would be immediate demand for success. Is he the sort of boss who can thrive in that sort of pressure cooker of an environment? He proved his worth in the Championship with a title winning campaign but England’s second tier and the top flight are hardly comparable. He must also ask himself if he is happy with leaving Wolves right now, or does he have more to do before he can consider his project complete? Only time will tell, but it should come as no surprise to see his managerial performances catching the eyes of the big boys.
