If there is one Newcastle United player who regularly draws the ire of the club’s supporters, it’s much-maligned striker Joselu.
To be fair to the fans, he has been absolutely woeful since joining the club. He’s simply not a Premier League-level frontman, and the performances of Salomon Rondon this season has shown just how far behind the Spaniard is.
The Toon Army will surely be jumping for joy, then, with the news that the former Stoke City man is likely to be on his way out when the season finishes in a few months.
Journalist Chris Waugh claimed on a Q & A [11:47] on The Chronicle’s website that Joselu is certainly among the senior players the club will be looking to offload this summer.
That’s music to Newcastle fans’ ears. Joselu is essentially a waste of a salary at the moment. He has rarely made the match day squad since the turn of the year and is a million miles behind Rondon in Rafael Benitez’s plans.
Whether Benitez remains at the club or not, there is unlikely to be a boatload of cash to spend on Tyneside this summer. It would be worth whoever is in charge offloading a few unwanted players in order to free up some funds to improve the squad. Joselu, it appears, would certainly fall under the category of an unwanted player.
Getting rid of Joselu is a way to not only create some money to spend in the window, but to get the supporters onside. There’s unlikely to be any Magpies fans who would object to him being booted out of St James’ Park.
With that said, the supporters will be over the moon after reading Waugh’s verdict. Now the club needs to make good on the journalist’s prediction.
