Newcastle United could pick up as much as £27million for Aleksandar Mitrovic’s sale to Fulham but it is more likely to be somewhere between that and the £22million base price, according to journalist Chris Waugh.

The Chronicle reporter claimed in a live question and answer on the newspaper’s website (11:36) that the Magpies agreed a deal worth £22million for the Serbian’s sale last summer – a fee which will be fully paid but in instalments – with add-ons and clauses totalling £27million.

It is stated that the full amount is unlikely to be paid due to the terms of the deal and that Newcastle are not likely to have any sell on clause for when he leaves the Cottagers.

Opinion

A mixed bag of news for the Newcastle fans, who would no doubt have been thinking they hit the jackpot when fees of £27million were reported. The £22million is a decent amount of money for a player who never really fit in under Rafael Benitez at St James’ Park and although it might not be paid in a lump sum, it will still help fund the club’s spending in the transfer market. The mistake seems to have not securing some sort of sell on fee for a future move. With Fulham struggling in the Premier League but Mitrovic starring for them, it seems inevitable a new club will look to pounce this summer. The Cottagers, looking to get every penny possible, will charge suitors a hefty fee and Newcastle could have profited even more off that. Still, hindsight is a wonderful thing and maybe the Magpies will not forget to demand such terms in the future.
