Losing Christian Eriksen this summer would be a massive blow for Tottenham, and the club would struggle to replace him, according to Sky pundit Clinton Morrison.

The talismanic Dane is out of contract in north London at the end of next season, and has yet to put pen to paper on a new deal.

Speaking on Soccer Saturday (Sky Sports News, 12pm, March 16th), Morrison claimed that his potential departure could be a massive issue for Spurs.

He said: “He’s been brilliant this season, any role they’ve asked him to play.

“I think he’s been excellent, and it would be hard to replace him. I don’t know why he’s not signing a contract at Tottenham, he’s been outstanding and I thought he had a good relationship with Pochettino.

“But if they lose him, that’s a massive blow because he’s been tremendous.”

OPINION

Saying that Spurs would miss Eriksen is like saying water is wet, but as the prospect of losing him looms ever larger, it is a reality that must be given more and more thought by the club. In an ideal world, they would convince him to sign up immediately, but you get the impression that if a deal hasn’t been done yet, it might not get done at all. The problem Spurs have is that their wage structure, maligned for so long by nearly everybody, is so tight that it doesn’t allow for players like Eriksen to enjoy the kind of personal growth that he has in recent seasons. Yes, they can sign him on the cheap, and yes, they can make him a central figure for their silverware hopes, but when it comes down to it, he will be looking at his peers and wondering why they are paid substantially more for much poorer work, and why he still hasn’t got a winner’s medal from his time England. Neither of those questions are easy to answer, and neither bode well for Spurs.
