Scott McTominay was one of the best players on the pitch when Manchester United beat Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday night, proving many Leeds United supporters wrong in the process.

The 22-year-old midfielder was superb as Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s men secured a 3-1 victory in Paris to progress to the Champions League quarter-finals, keeping the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Julian Draxler and Marco Verratti quiet.

However according to some Leeds fans in October, McTominay would not have been a good signing for them.

The Sun reported that while Jose Mourinho was in charge at Old Trafford that the Portuguese boss was considering letting McTominay leave Manchester to go out on loan.

It was understood that Leeds and Aston Villa were interested in the defensive midfielder, but a change of management at Old Trafford saw the Scotland international stay put past the close of the January transfer window to play a key role in recent fixtures for Solskjaer.

When that news was reported, This is Futbol rounded up a number of tweets by Whites supporters, who were quick to rubbish McTominay.

One claimed the £25,000-a-week [Daily Star] ace was an “awful player” as another claimed he’s “terrible”.

McTominay silenced those critics with a masterclass of a performance against some of the best players in European football on Thursday.

Fair enough, he was not playing his best football at the time.

However Mourinho was playing the midfielder out of his natural position in the centre of the defence and as soon as the ex-Chelsea boss was sacked, it become clear that the players at Man United are a lot better than many perceived.

It is true though that form is temporary and class is permanent, and McTominay has proved that he would be cut above most midfielders in the Championship.

He would have been a sensational signing for Leeds in January and would have been one who would have made a major difference in the club’s bid to win promotion back to the Premier League.
