Rangers midfielder Ross McCrorie could be dropped to the reserves team as they take on Partick Thistle at Lesser Hampden on Monday, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper claimed on their website [08:27am] that Glenn Middleton and January signing Matt Polster could also feature in the reserves league fixture.

McCrorie, 20, has been a regular sight in Steven Gerrard’s first team this season, appearing 25 times across all competitions, however his spot in the side to face Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup on Tuesday is surely in doubt if he plays for the reserves on Monday.

OPINION

McCrorie was not in the squad that drew 1-1 with Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup quarter final, and he was an unused substitute against Hibernian last Friday, so there is a chance that he is short of match sharpness and featuring in the reserves game could do him some good. However if he does play against Partick’s reserves, then surely the midfielder will not be involved in the Scottish Cup replay at Ibrox on Tuesday night. Gerrard has relied upon Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara and Scott Arfield as his three central midfielders in the last few weeks, but he could do with a player like McCrorie on the bench to come on a shore things up at the back if they hold a narrow lead. Maybe McCrorie will just get 45 minutes in the reserves if he does play, that way he won’t be too tired for the game against the Dons.
