Newcastle United fans would be “very happy” if they signed Atlanta United centre-forward Josef Martinez, according to beINSPORTS USA journalist Roberto Rojas.

The Paraguayan-American reporter, who offered plenty of details on Miguel Almiron’s move to St James’ Park, claimed via his personal Twitter account on Friday that Martinez, 25, would also be a welcome addition at St James’ Park.

Martinez has been prolific for Atlanta since joining them in March 2017, scoring 57 goals in 63 appearances across all competitions.

He hit a brace on Friday as the MLS side beat Herediano 4-0 in the North American Champions League.

OPINION

Almiron has taken to life at Tyneside like a duck to water, so it would be natural for Newcastle fans to start think about more players that they could sign from MLS who would fit in at St James’ Park. Martinez has been superb for Atlanta. He won the MVP award in 2018, scoring 35 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions as Atlanta won the MLS title. The Venezuela international combined beautifully with Almiron and it would be a sight to see if he was to ever reunite with the Paraguayan ace in the Premier League. However Newcastle have Salomon Rondon at the moment, who is an international team-mate of Martinez. Rondon is on loan from West Brom but it is widely-expected that he could stay at St James’ Park once his temporary deal expires. It would be a devastating attack force though it the Magpies had Almiron playing in behind Rondon and Martinez.
