Rangers must make an audacious move to sign Aaron Mooy in the summer transfer window with it looking as though Huddersfield are going to be relegated from the Premier League.

Mooy, 28, has been superb for the Terriers, but even a player as good as him has been unable to help the Yorkshire club avoid their current predicament as they sit rock bottom of the English top-flight, 14 points away from safety with nine games remaining.

The Australia international also missed over a months’ worth of action during the festive period, which also failed to help Huddersfield’s situation.

Huddersfield’s demise is likely to be good news for other teams in the summer transfer window though as a player of Mooy’s quality is likely to be on the move for a fraction of what he is actually worth.

Fox Sports Australia pundit Bruce Djite has claimed that could be the case.

“I think he’s too good to play in the Championship now,” the ex-Australia international told Fox Sports.

“He’s been there, he’s done that, he had a fantastic season in the Championship playing for Huddersfield in previous seasons, so I think he makes a move.

“It’s time for him to start looking, if he hasn’t already.

“Does he stay in England? Can he get another Premier League gig? I think he’s good enough, but there are a lot of moving parts.”

Although Mooy is being tipped to move to another Premier League club, the ex-Manchester City midfielder does have connections to Scotland.

He married his Scottish wife in Glasgow in 2017 and his career really kicked off when he spent two seasons at St Mirren between 2010 and 2012.

That does not mean that it won’t be tough for Rangers to sign Mooy as ESPN reported last summer that Manchester City have an option to buy him back for £20million and there has also interest in him from Everton, West Ham United and Southampton.

But if Rangers really do mean business then why not have a go at signing the 28-year-old?

He is an upgrade on every midfielder they currently have at the club and Ibrox would surely roar if Steven Gerrard and Mark Allen were able to strike up an agreement.

One of Djite’s colleagues at Fox Sports Australia seems to think that there is a chance the Gers could sign Mooy.

Fox Sports commentator Simon Hill said: “Aaron, with the greatest respect to him, is not the most outgoing personality. Maybe he is in the comfort zone in the UK.

“I just wonder whether a return to the Scottish Premier League (could be on the cards) with maybe a Rangers.”

If some of the top names in the Australian football media are suggesting it could happen, then why not?

Rangers’ finances are looking pretty healthy and there is a chance that Alfredo Morelos could leave Ibrox for big money in the summer.

Gerrard would undoubtedly love to sign a top-class midfielder who is at the prime of his career and Mooy could be the one who takes Rangers back to the top of Scottish football.
