Gray: Timing of Rodgers exit shocks me

|

Andy Gray has ripped Brendan Rodgers’ decision to leave Celtic mid-season apart, saying he’s “destroyed” everything he achieved north of the border.

Talking on the live #KeysandGray show on Twitter (beINSPORTS, Friday, 11am), Gray said “Celtic fans are absolutely furious. The timing shocks me, it really shocks me.

“This is a young man who would probably only have had the late, great Jock Stein ahead of him in the Scottish game. Ahead of Dalglish, Strachan, Martin O’Neil.

“He’s destroyed all of that with the timing of his exit from Celtic. 10 weeks? Come on Brendan, 10 weeks was all Celtic fans wanted, stay and do the treble treble.

“He would have got a statue outside Parkhead if he’d achieved that. No chance of that now, he’s more likely to get an effigy.”

10 weeks. When you say it like this it really brings home the shocking nature of the timing of Brendan Rodgers’ exit. Had things got that bad at Celtic that he would rather rip his legacy up there to take over the job at Leicester? Maybe we’ll never know what went on behind the scenes at the club but there were obviously tensions there. He did win the club a lot of money in the Champions League and he could have expected to have more money to re-invest in the team, but that still doesn’t explain why he could wait until the summer to move. We might find out more today, with Rodgers due to take his first press conference as Leicester manager at lunchtime, but it seems like he’s just jumped at the first shot of Premier League football. The speed of the move was astonishing. The anger from Celtic fans is running deep though and in some cases is crossing a line. He won’t be welcome around Celtic any time soon.
