Everton must swoop for Giroud

Strikers who can guarantee you 15 goals in the Premier League are few and far between if you’re outside of the top six.

Everton have found it really hard to fill that position and it’s fair to say that Cenk Tosun isn’t the man. He’s only scored two in 21 league appearances this season.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has done better, with six from 28, but Marco Silva desperately needs someone to lead the line with authority next season and there’s a player who will surely be bursting for a move this summer – and will be available for free.

Olivier Giroud’s move to Chelsea hasn’t worked out and it’s not easy to see why. The towering 6ft 3in striker is a man on fire in the Europa League and he notched the perfect hat-trick on Thursday night as his side dismantled the hapless Dynamo Kiev. He’s the top scorer in the Europa League with nine goals and he’s still the main man for France, with an incredible international record of 33 goals in 87 games.

He wouldn’t come cheap – he’s on £120k-a-week at Chelsea at the moment, but he’s also out of contract in the summer and will be available for free. That’s a trade-off that makes him a very attractive option, even at the age of 32.

Someone will snap him up in the summer and he’s highly likely to stay in England and the Premier League, which he’s made his home. He won’t stay at Chelsea where it’s obvious he’s never going to be trusted to lead the line in the Premier League. He could thrive at Everton and Marcel Brands must elbow Everton to the front of the line. He could be a Goodison hero.
