Ashley Williams is edging closer to leaving Everton for good in the summer when his contract at Goodison Park expires, and he has now admitted that no talks have taken place about extending his deal.

The 34-year-old has been on loan with Stoke City in the Championship this season, and it appears as though Everton have no plans to keep him on past the expiry of his temporary agreement with the Staffordshire club.

Williams does not want to talk too much about what will happen after this season, but the Wales international does drop a clear hint that he is unlikely to be on the books at Goodison once the summer comes around.

“There have been no conversations yet,” he said, as quoted by the Daily Mail. “I’ll sort to my own future at the end of the season. It is like any other summer where you have to make decisions.

“I’m in a position now where I’m out of contract and I’ve been on loan at Stoke, we’ll have to decide what I’m going to do.

“I think it would be a little bit disrespectful, in my opinion, to Stoke, to start looking into that before the loan that we agreed was up. I’ll finish the season then see where we are at.”

OPINION

Everton fans will definitely be relieved to hear that Williams is heading towards the club’s exit doors. Since he was signed from Swansea in 2016, his form has been absolutely awful. Last season he was a complete liability for the Blues and he has hardly impressed at Stoke in the second-tier either. Potters boss Nathan Jones has not named him in his starting line-up since the 2-0 defeat to Hull on February 2, and since then the club’s defensive record has improved massively. Stoke have kept four clean sheets in their last four league games without Williams starting, which says a lot about his quality. Statistics website Spotrac reports that the Welshman earns £70,000-a-week on his deal with Everton, so the Farhad Moshiri and Bill Kenwright will definitely be happy to see his contract come to an end. Williams will go down as one of the most expensive flops made by Everton in recent years.
