Rangers midfielder Steven Davis has said that his side want to go and “stamp their authority” on the game against Celtic on Sunday.

Rangers will be looking for successive Old Firm victories when they face Celtic at Parkhead, but it won’t be easy. They haven’t won at Celtic Park since October 2010, when one of their current players was on the pitch during his first stint with the Light Blues.

Steven Davis is back at Ibrox now and, talking in the Daily Record, he laid out how important the game was and what his side would have to do if they wanted to get anything out of the game.

“Obviously, this will be my first one in my second spell back at the club, so it’s one I’m really looking forward to,” Davis said.

“We haven’t got the results we would have liked of late and we just want to go there and stamp our authority on to the game.

“It’s obviously going to be difficult in the league this season. We have to be realistic about that but it’s important we go there and get some pride as well. Listen, you never know in football what can happen, so we just have to go there and try to win.”

OPINION

Davis hasn’t had the best of returns to Ibrox, with question marks over his form reflected in just four starts in the league under Steven Gerrard so far. However, he’s had a good international break with Northern Ireland and he knows how to beat Celtic on their home ground. That could be enough to earn him a start in the Old Firm clash. It’s a real shame that the two rivals aren’t closer going into Sunday’s game. The gap is 10 points and even a victory for Rangers would leave Celtic in total control at the top. However, stranger things have happened in football and the Rangers players must try to heap as much pressure on Celtic as possible. A defeat to Rangers could precipitate a run of form from Neil Lennon’s men that could open the race back up again. Like Davis said, Rangers have to be realistic, but they also have to go for a win. A draw is no use to them and a win, even if it doesn’t get them back in the title race, will be a huge source of pride for both players, fans and Gerrard. It should be a fantastic game.
