Chris Sutton has claimed that Dave King has backed Steven Gerrard, meaning that there are no excuses for the Rangers manager when his squad has not been good enough.

The Light Blues are very unlikely to win any silverware this season after being dumped out of the Scottish Cup by Aberdeen earlier this week and their 1-1 draw against Kilmarnock at Ibrox on Saturday.

After Conor McAleny put Killie ahead at Ibrox, Sutton rubbished the notion that Gerrard is not to blame for Rangers’ shortcoming this season, and believes that if anything, King should be praised for how he has supported the ex-Liverpool midfielder.

“This is his team. And whatever people said about Dave King at the start of the season, he has backed Steven Gerrard, in terms of bringing personnel in,” said Sutton on BT Sport Score [Saturday, 03:31pm].

“These are Steven Gerrard’s players, so there can’t be excuses on that front.

“Is it good enough for Rangers to lose to Kilmarnock at home? It isn’t.

“Rangers are a big club.”

OPINION

Rangers are unlikely to be anywhere near to Celtic when the Scottish Premiership season ends, and they could yet finish in third place yet again given their poor form. Gerrard has definitely overseen an improvement at Ibrox, but it’s only a slight improvement and not as much as what some fans would have hoped. Gerrard took the Gers to the Europa League group stages and won a game against Celtic. However he has not taken advantage of some poor performances by the Hoops in the league and failed to reach two cup finals, losing to Aberdeen in both competitions. At the moment, Aberdeen are still the second-best team in Scotland. Derek McInnes’ men have the better of Rangers in the big games and will more than likely finish second again. Gerrard cannot afford anything but a second-placed finish, but their form right now is very worrying, and it does not help that Aberdeen will be boosted by their win in the week.
