Chris Sutton believes that Neil Lennon should be hired as Celtic’s permanent manager.

Lennon returned to Parkhead last month when Brendan Rodgers joined Leicester, but the ex-Hibernian boss was only appointed as a temporary boss to see out of the rest of the season.

However Sutton believes that hiring Lennon know will stop a lot of uncertainty going into the summer.

“I actually think that he’s been there before, he knows the club well. They should appoint Neil as manager and move on because if they don’t, it’s all going to be up in the air with Champions League qualifiers,” said Sutton on Scottish Football Extra Live on Friday night [07:06pm].

He added: “They have to start planning now, if they’re not going to appoint him now and bring someone else in in the summer, it’s a mess.”

OPINION

Celtic should not hire Lennon. He is a step backwards from Rodgers and Peter Lawwell needs to have his eyes on someone who can transform the club’s fortunes in Europe before going for the ex-Hibs boss. It’s the style of football that some fans won’t like as well. Rodgers got Celtic playing brilliantly in domestic football, which is why the club went on a record breaking unbeaten run of 69 games. Will Lennon be able to do that? Probably not. He should not be hired just because he’s available now, which seems to be what Sutton is getting at. Celtic should have a lot of staff members working on who is going to be the next permanent boss at Parkhead, so it should not spill over into their early Champions League qualifiers. The Hoops need to get someone lined up and confirmed before the season ends. That way they can come in, work with Lennon, get to know the place and get everything ready before the summer starts.
