OPINION
Chelsea left back Marcos Alonso certainly didn’t produce his finest performance in his team’s 2-0 defeat to Everton on Sunday. The Spaniard was a star of Antonio Conte’s title winning side of a couple of years ago, but at the moment he looks like a shell of the man who excelled at Stamford Bridge following his move from Fiorentina. His form under Maurizio Sarri has been pretty woeful on the whole and that merely continued at Goodison Park. He couldn’t really influence the game in any meaningful way from an attacking point of view, while he never looked truly comfortable dealing with Richarlison and co. in the defensive side of the game. He seems like someone who is ideally suited to the left wing back role he frequented under Conte, but who falters when played as an orthodox full back. We saw some more evidence of that on Sunday, as we have done on many occasions this season. The nadir was when he gave away a penalty for a foul on Richarlison, even if the decision looked rather harsh.
