Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay has said that Getafe won’t “be rushing” to take up their option on attacker Samu Saiz in the summer, after a disappointing loan spell.

However, he also said that he doesn’t think that Leeds have a recall clause, so Saiz won’t be back to help with their promotion push this season.

Hay said, “Having spoken to people in Spain, I don’t think there’s any recall clause”.

The ultra-reliable Leeds journalist was responding to a story from a Twitter account purporting to be a journalist, who claimed a recall clause did exist but that Leeds hadn’t triggered it yet.

It looks like that is fake news. Hay delivered the update on his personal Twitter page on Tuesday afternoon.

OPINION

Leeds are missing Saiz’s creativity, no doubt about it. But, when he left, he went back to Spain for personal reasons. That hasn’t worked out for him and he was dropped for Getafe’s latest game, but there’s no hint that either Leeds would want him back or that he would be willing to come back anyway. He left quickly and the noise that came out from Elland Road was that they didn’t want him to be a disruptive influence on the other players. That’s the last thing that Leeds need with 11 games to go in the season, and if Saiz came back the team would definitely be disrupted. We think it’s for the best that there’s no recall clause, but his disappointing loan spell could make it harder for them to realise his value in the summer. And that’s money Leeds will desperately need when they move to the Premier League. The other option is that Saiz will return to Elland Road in the summer and may well fancy a shot in the Premier League. Whether Leeds take him back is another matter. After the manner and speed of his departure, we’d imagine they his time at Leeds is over.
