Many Leeds United fans are no doubt on cloud nine after their team’s terrific 4-0 win over West Brom on Friday night.

This game was regarded as a must-win for the Whites after a disappointing 1-0 defeat to QPR in midweek, and they certainly dispatched of their opponents with ease.

However, despite the number of excellent performances from the Leeds players, there is one player who stood out compared to the rest of his teammates.

That is right-back Luke Ayling, who was no doubt hoping to improve upon his woeful performance from the QPR loss a few days ago.

The defender was not particularly poor in this resounding win over the Baggies, but one thing that was more obvious than most is that he struggles to keep possession of the ball, something which stands out like a sore thumb in a Marcelo Bielsa team where possession is a key element of their game.

If he is not entirely suited to their style of play, then surely it would make sense for Bielsa to target a right-back in the summer transfer window?

Ayling has been a loyal servant to the Whites, but his contribution is likely to be minimal if he cannot match the way Bielsa likes to set up his team.

Bielsa needs a right-back who is not afraid to hog the ball, not one who is frantic with his passing, so it is clear what his priority should be in a few months’ time.

There is no denying that the 27-year-old is a talented player, but it is time for Bielsa to roll with the times and adjust to how his team are progressing – and if that means finding a player more suited to his style, then so be it.
