Aston Villa would strike gold by signing powerful Northampton Town defender Aaron Pierre as he looks ready to make the step up to the Championship.

According to HITC Sport, this view is held by a number of Championship side’s as there are several tracking the 26-year-old centre-back ahead of the summer window.

The football outlet claim with Pierre having only just over a year to run on his contract at Northampton, the League Two side are bracing themselves for there to be interest in the defender.

Dean Smith’s side are in need on injecting some new life into their defence come the summer and must ensure that they’re not only in the race for Pierre but that they win it as well.

The Villans’ defence has been a let down this season but with a defender like Pierre to call upon, it would certainly improve them.

The 26-year-old powerhouse has been in red-hot form this season for Northampton, looking a level above at times, as he has not only been a rock at the back, he has contributed six goals in his 35 outings as well.

While some may question whether Pierre can replicate his form in the Championship, given his power and how easy he seems to be finding life in League Two then you’d back him to be able to do well.

The Villans will likely want to avoid spending too much on fixing their defence and this means that Pierre is worth a gamble on.

With the player’s contract set to expire in 2020 and him no doubt being eager to play his football at a higher level, then that could see him go for an acceptable price that might end up proving to be a bargain.

This all means that the Villans would tick a lot of boxes with a move for Pierre and it seems like a no-brainer for them to pursue his services especially if the Cobblers end up cashing in on him in the summer.
