Jamie Carragher has claimed that Tottenham are still the best side outside of the top two, despite Mauricio Pochettino’s team facing mounting pressure for a Champions League spot.

Spurs are just the one point clear of nearest rivals Arsenal after a disappointing weekend that saw them lose to Southampton and the Gunners pick up maximum points against Manchester United.

Speaking on Sky Sports, former Liverpool man Carragher admitted that he still felt Spurs held an advantage over the their challengers.

He said: “I still believe Spurs are the best team out of those, maybe it’s a toss up with Manchester United.

“So you’d think eventually they’ll kick into gear compared to what we’ve seen in these past few weeks because they have to, but they still have Champions League as well.”

OPINION

Carragher is probably right about this one. It’s hard to see any of the three other sides, with the exception of the resurgent Manchester United, who have as much quality as Spurs and, on paper at least, you would fancy them to hod on to third spot. That being said, Arsenal looked good against United, Chelsea have looked like a much more solid unit since their, and Spurs seem determined to keep dropping cheap points against the likes of Burnley and Southampton. Third place is theirs to lose, but where as most sides would see that as an assurance of their likelihood to see the task through, you can’t help feeling that this Spurs side might actually slip and let their rivals in. If that does happen then there will be widespread frustration directed against a ho has not invested over the past two windows, and you’d have to say that it would be entirely justified. Hopefully, it doesn’t come to that.
