Wolverhampton Wanderers defenders Willy Boly and Matt Doherty have been included in Sky Sports’ power rankings’ Premier League Team of the Season.

The broadcaster announced the starting eleven on their website on Wednesday. The rankings are based on statistics from every top flight games this season, with Boly and Doherty doing enough to be included in their respective positions.

Centre half Boly has netted three times this campaign and has impressed in a variety of defensive statistical categories, earning him a spot alongside Liverpool standout Virgil van Dijk at the heart of the defence.

Doherty takes up residence at right back in Sky’s eleven, having registered three goals and four assists in the Premier League this term.

OPINION

This is well deserved acclaim for these two Wolves stars. Anyone who has watched Nuno Espirito Santo’s team this season can see that Doherty and Boly are two of the most important parts of this hugely successful side. It appears that the statistics back up that thinking as well. For Boly to be statistically one of the two best centre halves in the Premier League alongside Van Dijk is a huge testament to his performances this season. However, Doherty has arguably been the unsung hero of Nuno’s team this campaign. The Irishman is an absolute star in this division and has probably been the best right back this term. Names like Ruben Neves, Conor Coady and Raul Jimenez are always brought up when discussing Wolves’ success, but Doherty has been just as important as any of them. Both of these players deserve this recognition for their excellent seasons so far.
