Former England striker Darren Bent has suggested that he would be interested in playing Scotland, and claimed that Rangers and Celtic are two of the biggest sides in world football.

The 35-year-old, who has 12 caps for his country, has been without a club since leaving Derby County in July, but has hinted that he could be tempted by a move north of the border.

Speaking as a guest on Sky Sports’ Goals on Sunday, Bent said: “It’s something I’ve looked at before, had a couple of links there. I think Celtic back in the day, but the timing wasn’t great for me because things were going pretty well down here.

“It’s something I’ve looked at, obviously a league that is fascinating. You talk about Rangers and Celtic, you’re talking about arguably two of the biggest clubs in world football, so it’s definitely something I would do, yeah.”

OPINION

This is the kind of statement that could get pulses racing north of the border. Bent was, in his day, one of the sharpest and most lethal finishers in English football. Things have dropped off a little bit for him in recent years, but there’s no reason why, given the right opportunity and some consideration for his age and his limitations, he couldn’t still do a very decent job for a top level Scottish side. Realistically, Celtic and Rangers ould be the frontrunners, but that could present problems. The Hoops are well-sticked in the forward department, and seem to be keener on bringing in younger talent with room for progression rather than old hands nearing the end of their careers. The Gers would seem like a more likely option, but even then, their recent signing of Jermain Defoe, and the irresistible form of Alfredo Morelos, means that they too would probably hesitate on making move. That being said, it’s nice to know that Bent would be open to the switch. Stranger things have happened.
