Leeds United left-back Barry Douglas has hailed Jack Grealish’s “class” after he scored the winner in Aston Villa’s 1-0 victory at Birmingham on Sunday.

Grealish was attacked by a fan in the first-half, but went on to help his side secure all three points in the Second City Derby showdown at St Andrew’s.

After the game, the Villa attacker took to his personal Instagram account to post an image of himself, saying: “The cream always rises.”

Leeds’ £3million summer signing Douglas, and Kalvin Phillips both commented in the replies.

“Class from you,” said Douglas, while Phillips posted a couple of emojis.

OPINION

What happened to Grealish on Sunday was atrocious and there is no place for it in society, let alone football. However the way that the Aston Villa star responded to it, by scoring the winning goal for the team he supports, there’s surely no better feeling. It is good to see the amount of support he has been getting, even by players like Douglas, who played for Villa’s West Midlands rivals Wolves last season. No player wants to see what happened to Grealish happen to anyone else and it will be interesting to see what sort of direction the FA and EFL take when it comes to handing out punishments. Of course, the person who allegedly assaulted Grealish should be banned from every stadium in the country for life, but for Birmingham, there has to be sanctions as well. A points deduction or a stadium ban are perhaps the most severe and that may make fans think twice about going onto the pitch in the future.
