COMMENTARY
Had you asked any Aston Villa fans who they thought was most deserving of a new contract at the club and you can be sure that not one would have said Jed Steer. Shipped out on loan to Charlton Athletic at the start of the season it did not look like the goalkeeper had any sort of a future at the club, let alone one that lasted past the summer transfer window. How things have changed, with the Birmingham Mail reporting that the shot stopper has been handed a new contract, keeping him tied down until 2020, with a deal that was agreed back in January. That was before he managed to force his way into Dean Smith’s starting XI, leapfrogging the injured Orjan Nyland and Lovre Kalinic and despite the recovery of the latter, it is Steer who has remained. The Villa faithful have obviously been hugely impressed with what the 26-year-old has offered the side this season and if he had not been handed a contract extension in January, then you can be certain he would be fighting for one now.
