Michael Appleton has tentatively declared his interest in the West Brom job after Darren Moore was sacked on Saturday.

The Telegraph has reported that Albion chief executive Mark Jenkins is an admirer of Appleton and the former Portsmouth and Blackburn boss could be a contender to replace Moore in the Hawthorns hotseat.

Appleton has played, coached and been caretaker manager of West Brom in his career, and he has claimed that Jenkins still has his number after all these years.

“The reality is, I know a lot of people at West Brom, from the chief executive down to the people who work on a matchday,” said Appleton, as shown on the Sky Sports website.

“They’ve all got my number, it’s not changed in all that time.

“So watch this space.”

OPINION

West Brom should not consider Appleton to be their next manager. It would be good to see Appie back at The Hawthorns one day in the future, but not as manager. He would make a very good assistant boss or first-team coach, but the Baggies need someone who has a proven track record in the Championship – someone who is better than Moore. Jenkins has got a huge job on his hands in the coming days, as has Luke Dowling, who is probably leading the talks with the candidates for the Hawthorns job. West Brom need to get someone hired before the game against Swansea on Wednesday preferably, and definitely need someone in before the trip to Brentford at the weekend. There are only 10 games left to go, and each game West Brom don’t have a manager it is a setback for them. Slavisa Jokanovic is the most promising option out there right now. They should do their utmost to hire the ex-Fulham man.
