Sam Allardyce has said that people take Sergio Aguero “for granted” and added that the Man City striker should win this season’s PFA Player of the Year.

Allardyce was talking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show on talkSPORT on Wednesday and was asked who should be player of the year.

“I’d go for Aguero,” Allardyce said. “It’s a tough one but he hasn’t won it and he deserves it over the years.

“People take Aguero for granted as he’s doing what he’s always done.”

OPINION

How has Aguero not won the player of the year award yet? It’s fair to say that he gets taken for granted as he’s been banging in over 20 goals a season for years now – it’s just what we expect him to do. However, he’s arguably a better, more-rounded player now under Pep Guardiola and his stats are incredible. This season he’s scored 28 in 37 games in all competitions. Just taking the Premier League, he got 21 in 25 last season, 20 in 31 the season before, 24 in 30 in the 15/16 season and 26 in 33 the season before that. You have to go back to the 13/14 season for the first time he hasn’t scored 20 goals in a season in the league, and then he only played 23 games, scoring 17. He’s phenomenal and would be a deserving winner of the PFA Player of the Year award. There are so many talented players in the English top-flight at the moment though. Raheem Sterling is just getting better and better, Virgil van Dijk has turned Liverpool into title contenders and Sadio Mané has had a standout season. Any one of those four could get it without any argument from us.
