Alastair Campbell has claimed that Celtic fans do the best rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Ahead of Borussia Dortmund’s Champions League showdown with Tottenham on Tuesday night, Gary Lineker asked whether the German supporters or Liverpool fans create the best atmosphere with the song.

However political aide Campbell, who helped Tony Blair become prime minister in the 1990s, believes that Celtic Park is the best place to hear the Gerry and the Pacemakers hit.

“Liverpool or Dortmund? Who wins (singing You’ll Never Walk Alone),  asks Gary Lineker. The answer is Celtic!! I do love German crowds though,” he said via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday night.

OPINION

Borussia Dortmund’s famous yellow wall does create quite the atmosphere, but they do not have a shade on Liverpool and Celtic when it comes to signing You’ll Never Walk Alone. Maybe it’s because the song is in English or maybe it’s just because the two UK clubs trump all others when it comes to creating an atmosphere on European nights. Celtic’s award-winning supporters have had a lot to cheer about lately and although Campbell’s praise is nice to hear, it’s not something that the Hoops will be remembering in the future. It is a shame that the Bhoys have not been performing too well in Europe in recent years. For all the good that Brendan Rodgers did at Celtic Park, he never really got the team performing well in Europe. They failed to reach the Champions League group stages last summer and have not gone any further than the Europa League’s round of 32 during Rodgers’ reign. Hopefully that changes when a permanent successor is found for the now former Hoops boss.
