Aston Villa striker Tammy Abraham was nowhere to be seen in training with England’s under-21s with his calf injury but is not completely ruled out of their clash with Poland, according to journalist Nick Mashiter.

The Press Association reporter claims on his personal Twitter account that the Villa star, who featured for just over 72 minutes in the club’s win against Middlesbrough, is suffering from a calf injury that needs to be assessed by the Three Lions’ medical staff.

It is stated his absence from training is a precaution and he could still feature in the tie against Poland on Thursday.

Opinion

Villa fans may be hoping that Abraham stays on the sidelines for a little longer yet while on international duty with the England under-21s. They would of course not want to take away his chance of playing for his country but at the same time the club are chasing a play off spot and want their star men fit and firing for the crucial end to the season. If there are any doubts over his fitness then there should be no risks taken – after all, he is still a youngster who could do without long term damage which could well plague the rest of his career. The Villa faithful will be keeping a very close eye on his progress and if he does play they will be praying that he either does not turn out for long, or comes through the clash with no ill effects. Only time will tell how bad the setback is – and the results of the analysis could well be the difference to Villa finishing in a play off spot or not.
