Aston Villa are preparing to launch a transfer swoop for Barnsley centre back Liam Lindsay at the end of the season, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The Sun reporter claims on his personal Twitter account that the Villans are very keen on snapping up the 6’3″ (source: Transfermarkt) colossus from the Tykes this summer after his impressive campaign in League One, helping the Yorkshire-based side to push for promotion at the top of the table.

He also states that Villa have been in attendance at Barnsley’s last four games to watch the 23-year-old.

With just two league games missed this season, his latest appearance ending in another clean sheet against Portsmouth on Saturday, he and his teammates have the northerners flying high in second.

Good move for Aston Villa?

The Villans have had to endure a difficult season and it seems that there are going to have to be some changes in the playing staff if they are to mount a meaningful bid for promotion next season.

The defence has been one of the biggest problems for Dean Smith this season and Lindsay’s arrival ought to help bolster a shaky back line quite nicely.

He has been performing admirably in League One this season and while the step up from the third tier into the Championship is no easy task he does already have 42 appearances in the second flight.

Likely to happen?

Villa might well be hoping that Barnsley slip up between now and the end of the season, for prying him away will be much easier if the Tykes are not facing the prospect of Championship football next season.

If they are promoted then it could well be a tough task to try and get him to move from Yorkshire to the midlands and so they might have to have a number of alternatives lined up.

One to watch for the Villa faithful, who know that they need some more defenders to keep things tight at the back.
