Sky Sports pundit Stephen Warnock has claimed that Aaron Lennon would have an “incredible” impact on the young players at Leeds United if the Yorkshire club was to re-sign the attacker from Burnley.

The Sun reported earlier this month that Marcelo Bielsa is plotting to sign Lennon, 31, this summer having compiled background checks on the former England international.

Ex-Leeds star Warnock is unsure over whether or not a move would actually materialise, however he does believe that Lennon would be a welcome addition at Elland Road.

“It’s his old club, so he’ll know the area very well and he’ll know the club very well too,” Warnock told Football League World.

“He would bring a lot of experience to the team, and when you look at the young players coming through, the amount they can learn from him will be incredible.”

“It’s difficult to say how he’d fit into this team at this moment of time, however, as we don’t know if they are going to be in the Premier League, we don’t know if they are going to still be in the Championship, and we don’t even know if he’s going to move there.”

OPINION

As Warnock says, it all surely depends on what league Leeds are playing next season. At the moment, Leeds are second in the Championship and have occupied the automatic promotion spots for most of the season. However the Whites’ form has been quite poor lately and teams like Sheffield United and West Brom have closed down the gap between the play-offs and the team that once looked nailed-on for promotion. If Leeds do get promoted, then they should avoid Lennon. He is unlikely to play again for Burnley this term in the Premier League due to injury and his performances at Turf Moor have suggested that he is a player that is now best his prime. If the Whites didn’t get promoted then Lennon would be a good fit in the Championship. Leeds could do with depth on the wing and Jack Harrison will return to Manchester City in the summer. Leeds fans may want to see an old player like Lennon back at Elland Road, but they would definitely rather be in the Premier League.
