OPINION

After Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama was left on the substitutes bench for his team’s win over Leicester City on Sunday it appears as if his time at the club is coming to an end.

The fact that young central midfielder Oliver Skipp was selected ahead of the experienced Kenyan surely spells the end of the road for Wanyama in a Spurs shirt.

There was speculation in January that he would be shipped out last month, however, he stuck around and is attempting to work his way back from several niggling injuries over the past few years.

It seems, though, that he is very far down in manager Mauricio Pochettino’s pecking order. The likes of Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko, Eric Dier, Dele Alli and now Skipp are all seemingly ahead of him when fully fit.

It was the performance of Skipp on Sunday that will have really stung for Wanyama, though. The 18-year-old was extremely poor, failing to influence the game and eventually being replaced in the second half after a hugely mediocre showing.

So it’s clear that Wanyama can’t even get a game ahead of someone who doesn’t look ready for Premier League football. That is a damning indictment of how far the former Southampton man has fallen in Pochettino’s eyes. Something dramatic is going to have to happen to save his Tottenham career.

Indeed, it appears as if the 27-year-old’s exit is inevitable. Is he really ever going to be able barge his way past the aforementioned central midfielders? It’s highly unlikely.

He seems to be an afterthought these days, and his Leicester snub proved that emphatically. Wanyama, it’s sad to say, might as well start packing his bags now ahead of a summer exit.
