Chris Sutton has slammed Allan McGregor for a “shocking challenge” on Aberdeen’s Lewis Ferguson on Wednesday, and believes that the Scottish FA have taken the right course of action regarding the Rangers goalkeeper.

The Daily Record has reported that McGregor has been offered a two-match ban by the SFA after a studs-up challenge on Ferguson at Pittodrie earlier this week.

Sutton delivered his instant reaction to the news via his personal Twitter account on Friday.

“Good point…But however they got there it was the correct decision to ban him…. absolutely shocking challenge…” he said.

OPINION

McGregor deserves this ban and let’s face it, he is lucky to have avoided similar bans earlier in the season for similar offences. Bobby Madden would have had a good view of the incident but for whatever reason he did not take notice to the fact that McGregor planted his studs on Ferguson’s shin, without there being any real need to. It was a disgusting challenge by the Scotland international and it could have been a leg-breaker if he did it with any more force. Luckily Ferguson was okay, but Rangers should have been down to nine-men on the night and the Dons should have also been awarded a penalty kick. Derek McInnes will be reeling that Madden failed to act on McGregor’s challenge, especially now that the SFA are in agreement that it was red card-worthy. That doesn’t help him out at all. VAR is badly needed in the Scottish Premiership. It will be in the Premier League next term, so why not in Scotland the season after that?
