Alan Shearer has said that pundits are disrespecting Tottenham by not talking about them as potential Premier League winners.

He claims that they are bang in the race for the title and “they have shown they are not going away”.

Talking on the BBC, after the 3-1 win against Leicester at the weekend,  Shearer said that it was “very impressive that they keep getting results when none of those performances have been particularly great.

“It is a little disrespectful that not many people are talking about Tottenham as potential Premier League winners, because they are in the title race – and they have shown they are not going away.

“In an ideal world Tottenham would be doing what City did on Sunday, and tearing teams apart, but they are at a stage of their season when their squad is stretched and getting results is the only thing that matters.

“This is a three-horse race and it is going to be an exciting battle for the neutrals as well as for the fans of each of the teams involved.”

OPINION

Tottenham fans will love this. Most pundits seem to think that it’s a two-horse race, with Man City actually the bookies’ favourites despite Liverpool having the same number of points and a game in hand. Tottenham are five points behind but could move to within two of Man City if they win their game in hand. After it looked like Man City would run away with it at the start of the season, it’s turning into one of the best Premier League run-ins in recent years, and if Tottenham can hang in and keep grinding out wins, then they could upset the odds. Many people thought they’d fall away with Harry Kane and Dele Alli on the long-term injured list, but Heung-min Son, in particular, has stepped up and provided the goals. It would go down as one of the most impressive Premier League title wins if Mauricio Pochettino and his side could overhaul both Man City and Liverpool but, as Shearer said, they’re not going anywhere. And that will put even more pressure on their two rivals.
