Time for Katic to be released from Rangers exile

It was another day of disappointment for the fans at Ibrox as they watched Rangers struggle to create anything against St Johnstone on Saturday afternoon.

After a 0-0 draw away to Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup last weekend the supporters must have been expecting some improvement but the Bears in the crowd were treated to another display which could have quite easily sent many of them to sleep.

It is not even as if the Gers dominated and were frustrated by the visitors – in fact they looked second best at times and were perhaps fortunate to come away with a point rather than suffering defeat.

One of the biggest issues in Steven Gerrard’s side was his centre back pairing of Joe Worrall and Connor Goldson, whose poor passing and general lack of concentration and quality put the Light Blues under the cosh and considering that Nikola Katic was forced to watch on from the bench, time must be up for the current pairing.

Some might question how a change at the back will instigate an improved performance at the other end of the pitch and it is all about confidence.

If the attackers believe that their defenders can stay resolute and keep the opposition at bay, they can push forward with more regularity, taking risks and rolling the dice rather than keeping one eye on what might happen if they lose possession.

Katic brings an air of confidence and composure that Worrall and Goldson lack, not to mention a passing ability which would help Rangers keep the ball better and play out from the back into the middle of the pitch.

Whatever happens, the axe has got to be looming on the current centre back duo and while it might only be one who drops out, Katic’s inclusions should make the world of difference.
