OPINION

Jermain Defoe might have shown flashes of his genius since his January move from Bournemouth, but he’s not the man to lead the line on his own.

For that reason, we would give towering 6ft 4in striker Kyle Lafferty just his eighth Premiership start of the season on Saturday, when Rangers look to keep the pressure on Celtic with a win against St Johnstone at Ibrox.

Defoe, on big-money with his lucrative contract at Premier League side Bournemouth, is a fantastic option to bring off the bench in the second-half if needed.

Celtic have already shown how it’s done, smashing St Johnstone 5-0 in the Scottish Cup last weekend, and a win by a similar margin would show their rivals that Rangers aren’t going anywhere in the hunt for this year’s trophy.

Steven Davis should come back in for Ross McCrorie, Borna Barisic must replace 27-year-old Andy Halliday at left-back, and Wes Foderingham will get a rare taste of the Rangers gloves again with Allan McGregor suspended.

We believe this starting XI would bury St Johnstone on Saturday:
