There is little doubting who Rangers’ number one goalkeeper is and until the January market there was no questioning their number two either.

Allan McGregor is deservedly the man that Steven Gerrard has entrusted between the sticks this season, the veteran shot stopper rolling back the years to become a crucial member of the team in his second spell at Ibrox.

As for his backup, last season’s first choice Wes Foderingham has sat patiently on the bench, even playing the full 90 minutes against Kilmarnock in the league.

With rumours circulating about his future over January, he did eventually stay with the Light Blues – but that did not stop Steven Gerrard bringing in a new shot stopper to add to the competition already in the blue half of Glasgow.

Andy Firth was brought in from Barrow in a shock raid for Rangers and at 22-years-old he looks like one for the future – but could his shot come sooner than expected.

The Press Association’s Andy Newport has claimed that Allan McGregor’s hearing over a potential ban will take place on Wednesday and with a possible suspension in the offing, Gerrard will have to be making contingency plans.

Foderingham has not set Ibrox alight with his performances between the sticks and to see him start will fill the fans with fear, but giving him a shot in the line up would suggest he still has a shot of a future at Ibrox.

However, if he finds himself behind Firth in the pecking order when push comes to shove and that can be the 28-year-old’s Rangers career written off right there and then.

The Gers play host to St Johnstone this weekend and if McGregor is banned on Wednesday, then Foderingham’s future could become crystal clear on Saturday.
