Rangers have been hit with a potentially shattering injury blow, with both Kyle Lafferty and Jermain Defoe major doubts for the Premiership game against St Johnstone on Saturday.

That comes on the back of main striker Alfredo Morelos missing through suspension.

17-year-old striker Dapo Mebude has been recalled from his Scotland youth duty to provide cover.

This was revealed by Rangers manager Steven Gerrard ahead of the Saturday game. He was quoted by PA journalist Andy Newport on his personal Twitter account.

Lafferty is suffering with a calf problem and Defoe has a hamstring issue.

OPINION

This seems almost unbelievable. Rangers have three recognised strikers after Jermain Defoe was signed in January. To have all of them out for the same match is incredibly unlucky. The fact that Morelos can’t keep himself on the pitch will be brought into sharp focus now and he simply must start acting like a professional. Mebude is just 17-years-old and hasn’t played for Rangers yet but he’s been recalled to provide cover in case of the worst case scenario. Gerrard hasn’t ruled both of his other strikers out yet, but we can’t see him risking Defoe considering his age. Rangers desperately need three points to keep up with Celtic at the top of the Premiership and fans will be wondering where the goals will be coming from. Celtic didn’t have any problems finding them last week – they beat St Johnstone 5-0. Rangers will hope they’ve got enough in the locker even without their three main strikers.
