Swansea City midfielder George Byers has admitted that despite being born and brought up in England he would move to Rangers in a heartbeat.

The 22-year-old was born in London to Scottish parents, with much of his family still residing north of the border, and after moving his way through the youth system at Watford moved to south Wales to join Swansea.

However, despite beginning to establish himself as a regular for the Swans, Byers has revealed that Rangers are in his blood – his grandfather having worked at Ibrox – and that he would have no doubts in putting pen to paper if they made a move.

He was quoted on the Daily Record website as saying: “My grandpa used to work at Ibrox. He did the tours of the stadium and worked on a gate. It’s always been Rangers for me, since I was a wee boy. My dad drilled it into me.

“Any chance I get to go up to Ibrox, I go. It hasn’t been great in the past few seasons but things are improving now. If Rangers ever came in for me, I’d jump at it. They wouldn’t even need to ask the question.

“Not many people get to play for their boyhood club. So it’s one of my dreams – to play for Rangers. If the opportunity came up, especially now under a guy like Gerrard, it would be something else.”

Opinion

Rangers fans absolutely love any players who consider themselves part of the Ibrox faithful and so do not be surprised if the Gers are heavily linked with his capture over the coming years. At 22-years-old he is very much an up and coming talent and so you would imagine he would rather be playing in England, where the money and the quality is much, much higher than in Scotland, but it seems that his loyalties outweigh any of that. Swansea are going to be reluctant to selling him any time soon as he starts to earn more game time with the Welsh side and it would take a hefty bid to get him to Ibrox. Still, if the Gers cam calling he has already made his viewpoint quite clear and it could well be the Swans could do nothing to stop him in demanding an exit to link up with the Light Blues. He will be playing in Glasgow at some point, that seems a certainty, but it is a matter of when that happens.
