Former Celtic great Chris Sutton has blasted Motherwell for their conduct when scoring against Celtic in the Hoops’ big win on Sunday.

The Glasgow giants strolled to a 4-1 victory in the end at Parkhead, but they were pegged back in the second half when the visitors capitalised on some confusion among the Celtic players, with the Hoops believing the ball would be returned to them after kicking it out to get Ryan Christie some medial attention.

Sutton wasn’t happy with Steve Robinson’s side: “Justice done at Celtic… Very poor sportsmanship from Motherwell for their goal…,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account.

“Motherwell got what they deserved…,” he finished.

OPINION

You have to agree with what Sutton is saying, here. It wasn’t very sportsmanlike what Motherwell did to score their goal and as such they deserved to have a few goals put past them on Sunday. Celtic were always going to win the game, there wasn’t much doubt about that, but it was disappointing to see Motherwell go to these lengths to try and get something from the game. The hosts were clearly expecting the ball to be played back to them and instead Motherwell played on and Gboly Ariyibi ended up scoring. It’s not in the rulebook, but common curtesy dictates that when a team puts the ball out of play due to an injury possession is given back to them by the other team once play has restarted. Motherwell didn’t do that, and you hate to see that sort of conduct. Ultimately it didn’t end up affecting the outcome, Celtic were too good, but it was disappointing to see nonetheless.
