Jim White claimed that Steven Gerrard had done incredible things with Rangers in order for them to be nip and tuck with Celtic at this stage of the season but claimed the Gers boss had a problem in the form of Alfredo Morelos.

The talkSPORT host shared that it had been ages since Rangers and Celtic were so close in the league but despite this Gerrard still had a problem considering that the Gers’ 22-year-old forward picked up another red card against Aberdeen on Wednesday.

White added that he thought Morelos must be a worry for his Rangers teammates, as he asked a question about whether Stephen Kelly and Glen Johnson had ever played with a similar player, but did add he thought Gerrard was coping with his role at Ibrox very well currently.

“And now we see for the first time for a long tie in Scotland that they’re (Rangers & Celtic) are nip and tuck, his mate Gerrard has done an incredible things with Rangers but he has a problem Steven Gerrard and the problem is this fella Alfredo Morelos,” said White on talkSPORT (Thursday February 7th, 12:51).

“Sent off again against Aberdeen, it always seems to be Aberdeen, and Steven Gerrard is new to do this but I feel he is coping really well with everything.

“Did you guys (Stephen Kelly and Glen Johnson) ever play with something that you’d always worry you’re going to lose him in this 90 minutes as he’ll over do it, step over the mark and be down to ten, that someone was going to let him down.”

OPINION

White is spot-on to suggest that Gerrard has done amazing things with Rangers since arriving at Ibrox to take a place in the hotseat. Even when the Liverpool legend rocked up at the Gers, no one would have expected his side to be able to compete with Celtic just as intensely as they have. Brendan Rodgers’ side may hold the advantage in the race to the league title as it stands, given they sit six points ahead after 25 matches played, but for the Gers to be so close to them at this point is an accomplishment that deserves praise. Rangers finished third in the league last season, 12 points behind Celtic and feel that when the table is finalised, they will be at the very least much closer to Celtic than that. It is a very interesting time in Scottish football as it stands with Celtic getting tough competition for honours this season, and all eyes will be glued to every ongoing development in the title race.
