Hamilton Academical manager Brian Rice has hailed Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield, suggesting that he is a “main player” for Steven Gerrard’s side.

Rice gave the 30-year-old his big break during his spell as assistant manager at Falkirk, and is wary of the threat that he still poses.

As quoted in the Scottish Sun, he said: “He’s a great kid and a quick learner.

“I think he’s a main player for them. His runs forward create space for other people.

“He’s improved as he’s got older. His game intelligence has got better. He deserves everything he gets.”

OPINION

Arfield is a veteran campaigner now, and there’s no doubting the quality that he brings to the Rangers midfield. After a long spell in England, and with Burnley in the Premier League, the 30-year-old has moved back north of the border looking every inch the top tier player that he is. He still has years at the top ahead of him, of course, but that little bit of extra quality and experience he brings in the centre of the park has become a crucial component of the way that Rangers have approached their title challenge. Competition for places is high, in Steven Gerrard’s squad, which can only be a good thing, but it’s important to have that one man with a little bit of extra knowhow who come in and calm things when needed. Arfield has done that brilliantly, and is well on his way to becoming a form favourite at Ibrox.
