Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has been left drooling over the impact that homegrown talent Sean Logstaff has had in the middle of the pitch this season.

The young Geordie has been thrown into the deep end by manager Rafael Benitez after the Spaniard saw a number of his senior midfield options out through injury and international duty but has thrived in the first team.

Having been highly praised by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola in midweek, having helped the Magpies stun the title hopefuls at St James’ Park, Redknapp was also raving about the Newcastle starlet, comparing him to fellow Tynesider Michael Carrick.

He told Sky Sports’ coverage of the clash against Tottenham (02/02, 11:59): “He’s done a great job, he’s come into the team – got good experience going out on loan – and I just think he’s growing into this position now.

“He’s well organised in terms of that he’s got good feet, plays off his left foot, right foot, very comfortable on the ball. He’s playing in big games as well; Chelsea, Man City, and he reminds me a little bit of Michael Carrick – he’s got that nice upwards stance in the way that he plays.

“Always looking to pass the ball, get it to a black and white shirt as much as possible, always ready for people. You can see it there, he’s got that nice pass off either foot which is unusual for midfielder so that’s a massive asset to have.”

Opinion

There is nothing unusual about Longstaff – he is simply a highly rated talent who has obviously focused on becoming an all round midfielder during his formative years. His ability to play with both feet competently is a real boost for Newcastle in the middle of the pitch for it means he is not limited in moving possession across the pitch no matter where he might pick up possession. He is almost a mix of all of Newcastle’s other midfielder’s in one, with the passing range of Jonjo Shelvey, the physicality of Mohamed Diame, the tenacity of Isaac Hayden and the calm headed nature of Ki Sung-yeung. If he continues to perform the way he has been against some of England’s biggest and brightest stars then he is in for an exciting future himself. As someone who is a born and bred Newcastle fan, the Toon Army will be hoping he can become the next hero in the middle of the park for both club and country, following in the footsteps of the likes of Paul Gascoigne. Redknapp’s praise will certainly not be going to his head either, with the youngster mature beyond his years.
