Mauricio Pochettino and the Tottenham recruitment team should quiz their own centre-backs before stepping up plans to sign a centre-forward who can play with and understudy Harry Kane.

Spurs are certain to bring in a front man this summer to replace Fernando Llorente, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

The ideal man gave Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Juan Foyth the runaround in alliance with Ashley Barnes in Burnley’s shock 2-1 win over Spurs on Sunday.

Chris Wood might not have the glamour or allure of big-name forwards, but he is a spearhead to be reckoned with after being transformed from a fine Championship marksman into a potent Premier League spearhead by Sean Dyche.

Signed by Burnley after topping the Championship goal charts at Leeds United in 2016-17, the 27-year-old took some time to settle in the English top flight but is now playing the best football of his career.

His opening goal at Turf Moor on Saturday was his fourth in consecutive games and 10th in all competitions this season, seven of which have come in the league.

The strapping New Zealand international is 6ft 3in and formidable in the air, but he has a nose for goal, too, and is comfortable playing with his back to goal as well as combining the play.

Wood could be a brilliant signing for Spurs as he is durable – he has been available for selection for every match at Burnley this season – and tough, but would not expect to be a regular starter at a club where Kane rules the roost.

The Kiwi could score 10 goals a season for the Londoners and provide the missing piece of the jigsaw against opponents when a battering ram forward is needed to break the deadlock.
