Gary Lineker cracked a joke that the cat who invaded the pitch during Everton’s defeat to Wolves did more running than some of the Toffees’ players.

The Match of the Day host shared his surprise that the cat was on the pitch so long, causing the game to be delayed, and cheekily remarked about how much ground it covered compared to some members of Marco Silva’s side in the 3-1 defeat to Wolves.

Lineker quickly added that perhaps that his joke was a bit of an unfair one to make at the Toffees expense, before Jermaine Jenas and Alan Shearer analysed the Toffees’ performance.

“Two and a half minutes that cat was on the pitch and they couldn’t get him, he did more running than some of the Everton players apparently…but that’s a bit unfair,” said Lineker on BBC One’s Match of the Day (Saturday February 2nd, 23:07).

OPINION

It was a bizarre turn of events at Goodison Park on Saturday as a pitch invader, in the form of cat, stole all the headlines. Sky Sports Premier League’s official account uploaded the video of the feline running all over the pitch before eventually making its way done the tunnel, a few Everton players are probably relieved over the amount of attention this weird incident had. However while Lineker quickly held his hands up over the joke, some Toffees fans were probably nodding in agreement over the suggestion that the cat did more running than certain players. There were several Everton players who performed well below par and it’s starting to become a miserable time for supporters as a result. Wolves completely outclassed the Toffees and it was just a shameful display by all accounts by Silva’s side. Hopefully the manager will be able to turn it around in the come weeks, as you fear that there maybe new face in the dugout sooner rather than later if he doesn’t.
