Paul Merson has urged Arsenal to sign West Ham sensation Declan Rice following his transformation into a midfield anchorman this season.
The Gunners legend has been blown away by the impact made by the 20-year-old Hammer and claimed he is “surprised by how good he’s been this season” for the east Londoners.
Writing for the Daily Star, Merson claimed Rice will be closely watched by the Premier League elite between now and the end of the campaign as they plot big-money summer swoops.
“He signed a new contract but it’s not worth a whole lot of money and he could certainly earn a lot more elsewhere,” Merson told the Star. “Any of the top teams would take him.
“Manchester United and Arsenal both need a midfielder. Even Manchester City need someone to come in for Fernandinho now and then. Bigger clubs will be looking at him come the end of the season and probably are now.
“Now he’s chosen England, he’s just added to his value. Everyone is looking for young English talent. He ticks all the boxes. He’s got a massive future in the game.”

Any doubts as to whether Rice is the real deal have been ended by the consistent quality of his performances in the holding midfielder role he has made his own since Manuel Pellegrini took over as manager last summer. The Chilean has other, better options in central defence, where Rice impressed last season but also made errors in terms of positioning and decision-making. But, in midfield, Rice’s energy, composure and ability to harass opponents and then give the ball to more skillful teammates makes him invaluable. He is growing in authority and West Ham will know they have a real asset on their hands. So, what is the youngster’s transfer market value? The recently-signed contract, following extensive negotiations, has only increased it. Rice is probably worth at least £40million in the current market, given his age, potential and capacity to develop and improve in the coming seasons. The two Davids in the boardroom will be rubbing their hands together with glee.
